Herbert Graf, the Metropolitan's stage director, has written a book called "The Opera and Its Future in America." For Mr. Graf, who has the German tendency to intellectualization and schematization, the future of opera is the future of the eternal musical theater, of which the opera of the past three hundred years is one of the particular forms determined by particular social, political, and cultural surroundings. The true musical theater was the democratic folk theater of the Greeks, which represented folk emotion about subjects close to the folk mind and heart, and represented the need for community participation.
