Reinforcement of the Japanese army in northern Manchuria, together with reports of concentrations near the borders of Soviet-controlled Outer Mongolia, suggests that a sudden blow against eastern Siberia may be at hand. With the Red Army hard-pressed to defend the Caucasus from the Nazis, Tokyo may well feel that a stab in the back is in order. By their occupation of the western Aleutians, the Japanese have placed themselves in a position to interfere with the direct line of communications with eastern Siberia.
