The successful fight against the Broyles bills in this central Illinois community of Champaign-Urbana should encourage all who had begun to despair of stopping the trend toward thought control. In the beginning, these bills were expected to pass both houses by overwhelming majorities. Similar bills had passed both houses in the previous session but had been vetoed by the Governor. This time it was expected that Republican Governor William Stratton would sign promptly. It was first realized that opposition to this year's bills was not entirely a lost cause when thirty two representatives of Illinois organizations sought to speak against them at the Senate hearing on March 17, 1953.
