This article presents the author's views on the Goldie Watson, a teacher at the Martha Washington Public School in Philadelphia, who was among twenty-six teachers dismissed by the Philadelphia School Board for failing to answer questions as to their political affiliations and beliefs. When questioned by the Velde committee on January 17, 1954 Mrs. Watson had thanked the first rather than the fifth Amendment and been cited for contempt of the U.S. Congress. On June 4, 1954 the Philadelphia School Board summoned her to appear for the hearing.
