In most European cities there are state theaters, avant-garde theaters, fashionable art theaters, low-down theaters, and general commercial theaters. Entering any one of these theaters, one knows the frame of mind which befits the occasion. It is sometimes held that a play's box-office success is none of the critic's business. The author is not so sure. The theater is a social and collective art, and the audience is a vital factor in its composition. That there is an audience for a play is not an inconsiderable clue to the play's character; one must be certain, however, to define the nature of that audience.
