The article presents information on some of the books. "The Chosen Valley," by Margaret Snyder is a biography of a Minnesota town. More than half the book and by far the most interesting part, deals with the town's early years from its founding in 1853 to the Civil War. "The Affairs of Dame Rumor," by David J. Jacobson is a catch-all compendium of the rumors, gossip and propaganda that have infected communities and nations since the birth of the language. "The Reign of Queen Victoria," by Hector Bolitho, is a detailed, competent and judicious biography that is bound to suffer in comparison with the edge and elegance of Strachey.
