The article presents information related to some books on music. The author remarks that the latest book on jazz, "Jazz. A People's Music," by Sidney Finkelstein leaves Wilder Hobson's "American Jazz Music" still the one book on the subject worth reading. Hobson is someone with a sharp ear and eye who writes illuminatingly about the music as he has heard it and perceptively about the musicians as he has observed them. Hobson is aware of the conditions under which the jazz musicians have produced their music, but not of anything like the contradiction that has plagued jazz from its New Orleans beginnings.
