The article focuses on the book entitled "Music and Criticism," which has been edited by Richard F. French. The only issue which is argued explicitly by members of the Symposium is the question of the role of criticism in artistic creation. The author remarks that the Edwardian author E.M. Foster has raised a false issue when he speaks of the famous opium dream in which poet S.T. Coleridge conceived Kubla Khan as a perfect example of the creative process. Forster remarks with unusual clarity, that "if criticism strays from her central aesthetic quest to influences and psychological and historical considerations, something does happen then, contact is established."
