This article reports on various art exhibitions being organized in the U.S. The total impression made by the centenary exhibition of Albert Pinkham Ryder's paintings at the Whitney Museum is that of an unrealized vision. His pictures were built up with underpainting and layer on layer of pigment and glazes. Ryder's main impulse was to simplify nature into silhouetted masses of darks and lights; color was a matter of dark and light modulations within these masses. The primary effect is of simple, blocked-out pattern, startling because of the emotion discharged by the novelty of a relatively few shapes.
