Coal's Inflationary Balloon

U.S. President Harry S. Truman pleaded with the coal and steel industries not to believe their own propaganda and hike up the consumer's bill out of all proportion to their increased costs. He also tried to explain to the public how badly miners and operators had misrepresented their new contract. Unfortunately, he does not appear to have been too successful in either of these well-meaning ventures. Once the miner's chieftain and operators had settled terms of their new agreement, conflict vanished and they joined in a campaign to bamboozle the average citizen. Each had something to gain by making the boost seem as extravagant as possible.
