The article focuses on the book "Brazilian Literature," by Erico Verissimo. Verissimo disarms his critics at the outset by describing his book as a "very sketchy history of Brazilian literature and undoubtedly a defective one." Such is the sincerity of the chapters which follow that one is bound to see in these words something more substantial than the coy gesture of a writer who lacks the experience of a literary historian. The book focuses on the case of the most popular living novelist of a country describing informally the development of letters and thought in his native land. Verissimo accomplishes his task in an engaging, unruffled manner, without making exaggerated claims for the significance of Brazilian literature.
