Reminiscent of the days of blitzkrieg has been the speed with which events have moved in the Mediterranean. The liquidation of German resistance in Tunisia, the conquest of Sicily, Benito Mussolini's downfall, the aerial blasting of the Italian mainland, the successful invasion of southern Italy and the unconditional surrender of the government have been telescoped into a period of a little more than four months. The suspicion that Italy was the weak point of the Axis has been abundantly confirmed, for resistance from the Italians before their surrender was in many cases no more than nominal.
