Churchill and Italy

In his wide-ranging survey of the World War II, Great Britain Prime Minister Winston Churchill treated the House of Commons and the world to a magnificent piece of reporting. Yet despite the wealth of detail it offered, despite the brilliance of its descriptive passages, despite the appearance of candor almost amounting to indiscretion, the speech did little to allay the disquiet felt in liberal circles about the political conduct of the war. Particularly unsatisfactory were its references to Italy and what Churchill had to say on this matter was rendered all the more unpalatable by his reminder that he commanded a majority of the House and intended to use it, if necessary to silence his critics.
