The article discusses truckers issues in America. Indeed, in Alabama and according to the men, in other states too, a truck-driver is apparently no better off than a share-cropper, belong held in similar peonage by his employer. A man who can drive a truck applies to hauling firm for work. The company is agreeable, but he must have his own tractor (truck) and trailer. The driver is sent to a subsidiary of the company, which will obtain a loan for him. Obviously, he must do an awful lot of hauling to pay off the debt. And while he must sign a contract giving the company exclusive rights to his services and equipment, the company is not bound to give him a specified minimum amount of business.
