On January 14, 1943 Joseph Goebbels, after remaining on the defensive for some time, suddenly took the offensive. In the weekly article which he writes for his own paper — and which is reprinted throughout the U.S., read aloud from all radio stations and referred to for days afterward — he launched one of the most furious attacks he has ever been known to make. The object of the attack was the enemy within. Usually when Goebbels lets loose against enemies within, he does not define them very precisely. But this time he was fairly clear. "For the most part they call themselves conservatives," he said.
