The article discusses books and authors. Author Van Wyck Brooks "Days of the Phoenix" pleasantly ruminative memoir has enough of a period quality to give the present-day reader a keener sense of his own time and identity. It is a little startling to realize that the twenties are so far off. In those remote days, French writer Romain Rolland was regarded as a great world spiritual leader and author F. Scott Fitzgerald's prank of calling the Westport, Connecticut fire department to a party to announce that his guests, rather than his house, were "lit" was not thought too topheavy to be funny.
