The article discusses wonder drug sales in America. The "wonder drug" era began in 1943 with penicillin. This first antibiotic was followed by, a flood of new products-streptomycin, sulfas, vitamins, hormones, antihistamines, broad-range antibiotics and now the tranquilizers. From the health standpoint, it has been a marvelous period. From the standpoint of the financial well-being of the companies which make and sell these drugs, it has also been marvelous. Sales of ethical drugs (an ethical drug is a pharmaceutical not advertised to the consumer and sold invariably through a doctor's prescription) have expanded from U.S. $200,000,000 in 1939 to U.S. $1.5 billion in 1956.
