With his superb performances of Mahler's Second Symphony with the New York Philharmonic orchestra conductor Bruno Walter concluded what he has announced is the last of such periods of guest-conducting with this orchestra or any other. He was eighty years old this year. The observances of Walter's eightieth birthday in the press and elsewhere have been concerned not only with the musician but with the person, and Columbia's have included not only the recordings of the Mozart Requiem and Symphonies K.543 and 551, but a record for free distribution, "Bruno Walter in Conversation With Arnold Michaelis," on which Walter "speaks from the serene places of mature understanding about music, musicians and life."
