The article presents the views of the author on the July 1956 issue periodical "McCall's." The theme of that issue was togetherness. According to the author, McCall's is no more able to deliver togetherness than are the modern Communist and Fascist super-states. In five stories in that issue, the characters were all rather eccentric and difficult, but sincere and sophisticated. In every story, some attempt at fine style is made in the first hundred words, but not beyond. Fictions warrant closer attention. These are open to two valid criticisms. The first is its predictability and the other is bad editing.
