The article focuses on the controversy over Egypt's nationalization of Suez Canal. The principal technical arguments raised by the West in favor of internationalization are that the Egyptians cannot maintain the canal to serve the increasing demands and they do not have the necessary pilots. The first argument is based on the fact that tanker traffic is increasing in both volume and size of ships to the point where dredging operations are too formidable for the Egyptian government to merit to handle.
