The article focuses on several books about art and architecture. The books discussed are: "The Art and Architecture of China," by Laurence Sickman and Alexander Soper; "The Art and Architecture of Japan," by Robert Treat Paine and Alexander Soper; "The Art and Architecture of Japan," by Arthur Drexler; "Art in East and West: An Introduction Through Comparisons," by Benjamin Rowland. While these texts are scholarly and intensive throughout, Paine's is perhaps the most successful from the point of view of the general reader. It is less purely descriptive, more contemplative and more intellectual.
