The article discusses conditions during the last fifty years after the passage of Pure Food and Drug Law in the U.S. in June, 1906. This wide ranging law is being administered by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), an arm of the secretary of Health, Education and Welfare. FDA is responsible for protecting the citizens from improper food, drugs and injurious cosmetics. It sets standards for more than half of all the packaged foods and about one third of the prescription drugs retailed in the U.S. In last few years, FDA's responsibilities have multiplied, while its resources have not increased in that proportion.
