This article briefly discusses the book "Bang the Drum Slowly," by Mark Harris. This is a serious-humorous novel in the vernacular is difficult; one about baseball players seems impossible. This one disproves the rule for about half its length. The man-to-man sentimentality is as good as some of Hemingway; the tone and probability of life as it is recognized are all there.
