This article focuses on the book "The Theme Is Freedom," by John Dos Passos. Dos Passos' new book is a collection of his political prose written from 1927 to 1955, together with a running commentary which tells readers what he now thinks of what he thought then. The book presents an account of the Spanish Civil War, where Dos Passos met the harsh and terrifying reality of Russian power politics. The book also presents the description of the New Deal which he now rather grudgingly concedes was a legitimate and peaceful social revolution.
