The article discusses office and life of Massachusetts Governor Christian Archibald Herter. The Republican leaders seek him as a contender for the next Presidential term after Dwight D. Eisenhower. It was Herter's support for Eisenhower candidacy that led to his own entry into Massachusetts' gubernatorial race. During his first term, while he had a completely Republican-controlled legislature, the governor succeeded in putting through 95 percent of his program. The boldest step he took was in his invocation of the state's 1947 Slichter Act, which permits a governor to order seizure of a plant where a strike threatens to disrupt distribution of goods and services essential to public health and safety.
