The article appreciates H.L. Mencken's ability as a writer. The author feels that his death brings an end for an era. He is compared to George Bernard Shaw for instance he did everything he could to distract attention from the true character of his gift. Mencken took up all causes, the less respectable the better. On the other hands he identified himself with the journalists and was an iconoclast. He maintained that he would rather live in the United States than in any other country in the world because nowhere else was a civilization so absurd. Though his attitude towards U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt was criticized.
