The article discusses financial and political problems of Turkey. The crop failure of 1954 is one of the main reasons for Turkey's trouble. Other reasons are over-importing of western luxuries resulting in shortage of foreign currency, over-spending on industrialization and negligence of agriculture. The reason behind the political crisis was not the serious economic condition but the government's insistence that the high cost of living was a sign of prosperity. Turkey has also suffered due to its loyalty to the West, it has lost the respect of many of its Arab neighbors.
