G. Bromley Oxnam, as a liberal bishop was almost ex-officio and a sponsor for many groups organized to support worthy causes. He has fought for civil rights and freedom of conscience for many years, speaking and writing without fear. However Oxnam turned out to be different. He not only fought back, but he fought with rare skill. He forced the committee to give him a hearing and then he dominated all the ten hours of it. In the end, the committee had to report, lamely but unanimously, that it had "no record of any Communist party membership or affiliation by Bishop Oxnam."
