This article focuses on the book "Alaska, U.S.A.," by Herb and Miriam Hilscher. Alaska became a state and suddenly it seems a promised land. The size of the immigration problem can be measured by the flood of inquiries now washing daily into its bureaus concerned with job placement, agriculture, mining and the like. The letters come from every section of the country and many foreign lands. Not a few call long-distance. And some do not wait to inquire, even into their own fitness, but simply start driving the Alcan Highway northward. Alaskans who want their state to have a good start and not acquire a bad name are gravely concerned. Two, Herb and Miriam Hilscher, are so concerned they wrote "Alaska, U.S.A." It is mostly a compendium of information on living and working in Alaska with frank reference to the hazards, pitfalls and drawbacks.
