Payola: Sing a Song for Sixpence

The article throws light on techniques of payola. Some record distributors give certain disk jockeys a monthly "retainer" to plug their records. Or the jockey may be given a share in the music-publishing business, and may even own a copyright. Some jockeys are also in the retail record business or own an interest in record-pressing plants. Thus, there is no doubt that payola is practiced widely today by manufacturers and distributors-including many who dislike it, but feel that it is necessary for their survival.
