Frank Church, a moderate Democrat, swept into the U.S. Senate from Idaho and established himself as the outstanding political personality of the state at the age of thirty-two. Church, who will be the youngest Senator now serving, conducted a careful campaign which stressed moderation. In its closing days, he went so far as to pledge support to U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower in the international crisis. The candidate and his advisors anticipated that Eisenhower would repeat his 1952 victory in the state and stressed their support of the "bipartisan" foreign policy.
