This article presents the author's views on the literary scene in Japan. It is marked, or, as some hold, marred by the work of undergraduate writers. Taisuke Fujishima, a student at Gakushuin University, has written Kodoku no Hito, a story based on his own school life in which Crown Prince Akihito and Mrs. Vining, his American tutor, are central figures. The public was startled by this audacious use of the future emperor in a novel, and the book has sold well. Kunié Iwabashi and Michiko Fukai, young girls studying literature, have both written prize-winning novels. They are strongly influenced by existentialism and their common theme is sex.
