This article focuses on the mystery of a Colored man called Pieterson, in Johannesburg, South Africa. The Race Appeal Board was applying its own tests, during the hearing of legal argument, to decide what race the Colored man belonged to. The board, consisting of three civil servants, was uncertain whether a fourth official had erred when he classified the man as "a Native," i.e. an African. The man claimed to be Colored, i.e. of mixed white and black descent. The man then admitted that he could speak Zulu, although at home he spoke only Afrikaans, the language of the ruling white race. The board thereupon announced its decision--that Pietersen had rightly been classified as an African.
