Nearly half of the thickly-inhabited parts of Algeria are entirely controlled by the Algerian insurrection or are considered as either a zone of intense military activity or a zone of relative insecurity. The armed rebellion has not yet assumed vast proportions, but if there were 2,000 armed rebels a year ago, their number is estimated to have risen to 20,000 or 30,000. And their numbers may rise to hundreds of thousands by summer. They are no longer composed of small units armed with knives and some old rifles; they wear uniforms and are armed with machine guns and even some heavier equipment. Practically the entire Moslem population of Algeria is on their side, cooperating with them actively or passively.
