At the University of Minnesota the theme of the annual mid-November Religion in Life week explored a big question: Is religion necessary to the school's 23,000 students? For the faithful members of the thirty-four religious groups on the campus it was a period of appraisal aimed at finding out whether religious activities were anything more to them than comfortable social gatherings. In the process they also learned how others looked at their beliefs. A major problem facing those with previous church affiliations is that of finding out whether a religion which may have satisfied past needs will fit new ones. One girl, who has not gone to her Lutheran student group for two years commented that she felt need of it at first before she could stand on her own feet.
