This article focuses on the book "The Cypresses Believe in God," by Jose Maria Gironella. Gironella is a Spanish writer who lives in Spain, who is not yet forty, and who is of the belief that "no real poet ever deserts his country." And there is in this long novel, with its singularly moving title, a great deal of authentic poetry. "Revolution and blood," writes Gironella, "cypresses and bones," giving in one phrase the inseparable equation of political drama, and in the other the eternal commitment of man's substance to the soil. Evidence of this dual awareness is present on nearly every page of this book.
