Writer Thomas Mann's house stands on a hill overlooking the Lake Zurich, Illinois. Cowbells tinkle not far from its lawn, a village church rings out its vespers, a dog wanders through the rooms, the earnest intelligent family-member dog, the German shepherd dog which has appeared so many times in Mann's novels and stories, the dog whose predecessors have lived and died in his household. His wife looks as youthful as he. Her real name is Katia. According to Mann "the book "The Magic Mountain" was an attempt in another direction. So were the book "Joseph" and "The Holy Sinner" and "Krull." That's why I never have the feeling of mastery."
