This article presents information on various political developments in the U.S. Instead of setting a deadline for compliance with its school desegregation decree of May 17, the U.S. Supreme Court ordered only, a "prompt and reasonable start toward full compliance." The determination of what is "prompt and reasonable" is left, for the time being, to the lower courts, and the country can look forward to some highly diverting semantic arguments on this score. In recent years U.S. Congressional inquisitors have driven home the simple truth that a Congressional Committee is an improper forum for determining an individual's guilt or innocence. It was discouraging, therefore, to read the newspaper reports of U.S. Senator Estes Kefauver's treatment of three witnesses, operators of bookstores, who appeared before his subcommittee investigating juvenile delinquency.
