This article presents information on the book "The State of Alaska," by Ernest Gruening. Despite hundreds of books on innumerable aspects of Alaska, no work has appeared combining political and historical scrutiny. Gruening, dynamic governor of Alaska during some of the most interesting years of its life, 1939 to 1953, has bent his talents to the task. Newspaperman, editor and publisher before he entered the political arena, he has written a beautifully organized book which covers the political and economic development of Alaska down through 1954.
