Columbia SL-203 offers the Budapest Quartet's performances of the performer William Haydn's six quartets Op. 76; and inevitable comparison with the Schneider Quartet performances on Haydn Society HSQ-L reveals the major difference to be the refinement and smoothness of the Budapest playing as against the Schneider's more detailed, more energetic, more sharply rhythmed, and therefore more enlivening inflection. As a matter of fact the Budapest Quartet itself plays with more life Fin the old performance of No. 4 on ML-4216.
