At forty writer Oscar Wilde was the best-known and most successful writer in England. A few years later Wilde's name had become unspeakable. A generation later Wilde's homosexuality might have advanced his reputation. Even today Wilde's reputation is ambiguous and keeps him among those writers who are persistently read and admired while still generally denied the adjective great. Both as a man and as a writer Wilde had virtues which neither time nor scandal nor even his own inferior work has obscured.
