Abstract

Cannery Row Revisited: Steinbeck and the Sardine

Moore, Ward | October 16, 1954 issue

To both the paisanos and the old Americans indigenous to the Peninsula, Cannery Row was heaven-sent. Seasonal, irregular cannery work was suited to the temperament engendered by Monterey's climate and tradition. Further, it promoted a dignity on the ancient American go-to-hell basis, unavailable to those in service occupations. If Carmel was a rural Greenwich Village, Cannery Row was a proletarian bohemia. Cannery Row is no longer softened by a transmuting haze of artistry--it is tidied up and prettified beyond recognition.
