The general debate which opened the current session of the United Nations Assembly lasted an unusually long time-there were forty-two speakers but it is at last at an end and the committees have begun their work. The oratory in the general debate revolved around five major points: The tendency of the big powers to by-pass the United Nations; Regional organizations; Technical assistance; The Middle East; Cold-war tensions. It must be said that an aura of hypocrisy surrounded many of the expressions of regret that the U. N. was being increasingly by-passed.
