Some of the unconscious aims of McCarthyism may be recognized by their effect on its adherents, others are less obvious. It is clear, for instance, that McCarthyism exhorts us to attack and destroy something which it labels communist or communism rather than to be "constructive" in any particular way. One of its subtler aims is to destroy communism to build it up, in its own image. It seeks to make communism into a more malignant and sinister force so that. McCarthyism by "exposing" it will appear more heroic champion of American ideals.
