The book "Mother" is written by Mary Harris Jones, which was published in 1925, a few years before. In the West Virginia coal fields that were her home for thirty years, off and on, she saw the feudal coal-camp system enforced by machine-guns until the great spread of union organization in the early thirties revivified the United Mine Workers there. While the elimination of thugs and the upsurge of union strength have not made West Virginia a paradise for the miners, the most obvious gun-toting aspects of coal-company domination in the state have now been virtually eliminated.
