The article presents an overview of the 1953 issue of "The Nation." U.S. Senator J. McCarthy is a specialist in simple situations: those who are not for him are against him; whatever is not black must be white. Last week the Senator faced a new situation and was as puzzled by it as a dog would be with a bone that jumped and did cartwheels. The Senator encountered two witnesses who declined to cooperate with him but refused to invoke the Fifth Amendment. In this instance, Senator McCarthy's preference for the simple situation is likely to deceive him.
