The article focuses on the recent diplomatic pother over the ANZUS pact. Its terms were carefully phrased to exclude any firm or specific military commitment. In this pact each party agrees to act to meet the common danger in accordance with its constitutional processes. The British case as officially stated, is that if Australia and New Zealand were involved in war, Great Britain would immediately and automatically come to their help. Economic rivalries complicate the picture. If Japan is to play the military role that the U.S. wishes to its first need is a secure economic basis for the rebuilding of its military strength.
