The article provides information on the Brazilian culture through the book "Brazilian Culture: An Introduction to the Study of Culture in Brazil," by Fernando de Azavedo. It forms a virtual encyclopedia of Brazilian life and history, the most exhaustive yet made available to American readers. Its first value is that of a book of reference, its elaborate indexes making its contents useful to the general reader apart from a consecutive reading. Under three general divisions-The Factors of Culture, that begin with an inventory of land and race, social institutions, developments of urban life, ethnic and political evolution, continue through accounts of religious institutions, intellectual life, literature, science, and art, and conclude with an assessment of educational history, institutions, reforms, and the situation they face today.
