In the past two years the very conservative, very respectable David Lawrence has become a McCarthy-Knowland right-winger. The sixty-six-year-old news veteran has reached a new peak in his astonishing post World-War II revival. Lawrence used to be much admired for his Christian forbearance. This, he explains, was an outgrowth of a deep non-sectarian interest in Christianity itself. While pro-Ally during World War II, Lawrence carried on a guerrilla campaign against the Roosevelt Administration because, he said, the Administration was carrying on its own guerrilla campaign against $25,000-a-year bankers.
