This article presents information about three books. These books are: "Willa Cather. A Memoir," by Elizabeth Shepley Sergeant, "Willa Cather Living," by Edith Lewis, and "Willa Cather. A Critical Biography," by E.K. Brown. Sergeant's book is rather sharp about Cather's respect for wealth and swagger, and her recurrent fear of dying in a cornfield. The best of these three books is E.K. Brown's authorized biography, which is a model of its class. More objective, and concerned with an analysis of Cather's work as well as her life, Brown also describes her early belief in the artist, alone in a hostile society, superior to human follies, fleeing from ugliness and monotony to things of beauty and enchantment.
